Ian Donnan
Dr Ian Donnan passed away on 15th May 2024 following a short illness.
Ian qualified from Manchester University and became a doctor in 1973, settling in General Practice. He became involved in aviation, was a PPL holder, and became an aviation medical examiner. As his experience progressed, he became Manchester Airport’s Medical Officer. Ian helped support the 1986 BMPA Autumn meeting which included trips to the medical centre, the air traffic control tower and Jodrell Bank radio telescope and planetarium. He remained an avid BMPA member and supported the association throughout. He had an 8-year run as Secretary before becoming President Elect and then President in September 2023. The February 2024 Winter meeting was a complete success, being very well received by members. This all stemmed from Ian’s continuing enthusiasm, knowledge, willingness to help and experience.
Ian’s funeral was held on 11th June 2024. He leaves behind his wife Sheila Donnan and his two children, Fiona and James. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and the many aviation personnel who used his professional services.
Charles Mayes
Members will remember Charles, who attended many BMPA meetings with his partner (later his wife, Raj Bansal, who died in 2018). Sadly, Charles passed away on 10th August 2020. His funeral was held on 1st September 2020.
Frankie Walters
Frankie Walters sadly died following a fall on Sunday 8th September 2019. She was one of the longest-standing members of the BMPA and was our first Treasurer (1968-1974). She was president 2001-2003 and organised her Annual Meeting in Newcastle upon Tyne, a meeting that everyone who attended will remember for ever. Frankie continued her service to the BMPA as auditor of accounts from 2003 until her death. She will be sorely missed. A Service of Memorial was held at St Andrews church, Corbridge, Northumberland on 16th September 2019.
Carol Linton
Carol was the widow of Chris Linton, founder member of the BMPA. Carol was a regular attender at more meetings than most of us can remember and continued to attend as a close friend of many of us. She died on 16th February 2019, aged 80. Her funeral was held at St Mary’s Church, Hayling Island, Hampshire on 8th March, attended by a large number of her friends and family, including many from the BMPA.
Dr Andrew Clymo
We are sad to report the death of Andrew Clymo on 13th September 2018 at the age of 82. He served the BMPA as Secretary, 1995-2003 and as President, 2009-11. A Memorial Service was held on Saturday 3rd November at St Peter’s Church, Kinver and was attended by a large number of friends and family. Eight friends from the BMPA were present. Afterwards, Sara Clymo invited everyone to their delightful home for refreshments and to view photographs and artefacts illustrating Andrew’s eclectic interests and achievements.
